How to Stay Healthy During Flu Season from CityMD Urgent Care, Manhattan, New York

Oh, the dreaded flu. Every year we do our best to not get sick, and yet for millions of Americans, the flu catches up to us sooner or later. But it doesn't have to be that way. By being armed with the right tips and tools, you’ll have a fighting chance against those pesky germs.

Read on to find out what the CityMD staff recommends looking out for when it comes to the flu.

Time frame: Though the flu typically peaks during January and February, the season lasts from October to May. You may not expect to battle this illness ‘til winter comes, but there is a chance you can catch it as soon as early autumn. It’s never too soon to get prepared.

Symptoms: When you are infected with influenza, you may just think it’s a terrible cold. But typically, flu symptoms develop quickly and are more severe than the more common cough and cold illness. Here are some of the signs to look out for:

  • High Fever
  • Muscle Aches
  • Chills
  • Sore Throat
  • Intense Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dry Cough
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Treatment: One of the best ways to alleviate the pain and discomfort associated with influenza is by consistently taking fever reducers, such as Tylenol or Advil to lower your temperature. These pills will also take away your muscle aches and pains, so they are able to kill two birds with one stone. The amazing thing about a fever is that you can feel better just as soon as you drop your temperature by as little as one degree.

Along with medicine, you will want to up your fluid intake and get extra rest, so that your body can recuperate as quickly as possible. You will also want to stay home during this time so you can prevent spreading the germs. If you are sneezing and coughing, or feeling stuffy, you can purchase a nasal decongestant and cough suppressant to alleviate these symptoms.

Prevention: If you live in a city as densely populated as Manhattan, you understand how hard it can be to get some space and avoid those nasty germs. But by being more mindful, you can make great strides in fighting off these infections. Make sure to keep antibacterial soap nearby and always wash your hands after using public transit. You may also benefit from drinking more water during the winter months and taking a multi-vitamin every day. If you feel the first symptoms of the cold/flu coming on, grab that Vitamin C powder and mix yourself a drink. Another tip for boosting your immune system: fitness! By maintaining a consistent workout schedule you can feel great and stave off the winter blues, all while getting added protection against the flu. Lastly, we always recommend being proactive and getting your annual flu shot. Every little bit helps!
