Preschool children have a lot to memorize in preparation for grade school, including the ABCs, the months of the year, and, of course, the days of the week. If you’re wondering if there’s a fun way to teach them the days of the week while making memorization a little easier, the talented teachers at Cherokee Academy at Clayton in Canton, GA, would love to share a few.

Here are some great ways to teach the days of the week that stimulate multiple learning styles:

  • preschoolThe Days of the Week Song: Catchy songs help people of all ages learn and memorize new things. If you learned the Days of the Week Song as a child, there’s a big chance you have it stuck in your head already! Sing it to your child often, and they will eventually learn it too. If you never learned one, many versions are available online. It’s best to find one version and stick to it to avoid confusion. Your child may learn other versions eventually, but the first one they learned will always seem like the “definitive” version.

  • Make a Days of the Week Chart: Want to help your preschool-aged child learn the days of the week in a hands-on way? Get out some card stock and help them make a chart featuring all the days of the week. One effective way is to make seven boxes in a row with the names of the week inside. Your child can then color or decorate it. Then, when you hang up the chart, you can ask your child to mark the current day of the week with a special magnet or another marker. They can move the marker once a day.

  • Plan a Weekly Family Agenda: While it’s fun to make creative projects featuring the days of the week, obviously you want your child to learn how we use the week to plan out our time. Next time you organize the week’s activities, let your child watch. If you plan a fun activity for the weekend, maybe they’ll even want to count the days until the big day!
