Responsibilities of Medical Assistants

Taking Vital Signs

Medical assistants collect critical readings like blood pressure, blood oxygenation levels, heart rates, and temperatures so the physician can quickly and accurately gauge a patient’s condition.

Medical assistants work side by side with physicians charting patient records, including a patient’s current condition, medication assigned, and instructions given. If patients have questions for the doctor after their appointment, medical assistants may take the call and act as the go-between with the doctor.

Preparing Lab Specimens

Medical assistants are also typically responsible for lab specimens collected during appointments with patients. For this reason, additional training in phlebotomy from Big Apple Training can allow for even more career opportunities for medical assistants.
