If your gums are throbbing and your mouth is sore, you may be dealing with a toothache. While tooth pain is caused by a number of different problems, it’s important to schedule an appointment with your dentist so they can diagnose the issue and get the relief you need. John P. Belbas, DDS, located in Lakeville, NY, has helped patients deal with tooth pain for nearly 20 years.

Below, he shares the top three tips for dealing with a toothache before you have a chance to see your dentist:

  • Saltwater Rinse: Mix half a teaspoon of salt with an eight-ounce glass of water and swish it around in your mouth to reduce the pain. The salt helps neutralize the lactic acid that could be causing the decay in your tooth, relieving the pain and discomfort.
  • tooth painIce Pack: Unless your tooth is sensitive to cold, placing an ice pack or a bag of frozen vegetables on the side of your mouth can dull the pain and soreness. You could also place an ice cube directly over the tooth for quick relief.
  • OTC Anesthetics or Pain Relievers: Over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or aspirin will temporarily alleviate the tooth pain. If you’d rather not use a painkiller, another option is to purchase an anesthetic gel or liquid. You can apply it on the tooth or gums to numb the infected area.
