Due to recent advances in the field of science and technology, cosmetic dermatology has improved significantly in the past few years. According to Gateway Dermatology PC, which provides a wide variety of dermatological services in Lincoln, NE, a procedure such as Botox® is used for multiple purposes.

Cosmetic Dermatology

Though Botox injections are now commonly used for cosmetic dermatology, it was first researched and developed for use in treating neurological disorders such as crossed eyes and uncontrolled blinking. Doctors then noticed how the injections softened the lines around the eyebrows. Botox is injected into muscles, where it blocks nerve impulses to those tissues.  The muscle activity that causes the lines is reduced, and a smoother look results.  Without a muscle contracting beneath it, the skin has a difficult time wrinkling.  On average, the treatment lasts three to four months, which makes Botox injections a great option for people who are looking to maintain a youthful appearance.

Hyperhidrosis (hi-purr-hi-DROE-sis)

In 2004, the FDA approved the use of Botox for the treatment of severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis or excessive underarm sweating, which can be uncomfortable and interfere with everyday activities. OnabotulinumtoxinA, the active ingredient in Botox, can temporarily block the secretion of the chemical responsible for controlling the body’s sweat glands, stopping sweating around the treated area. Botox treatments reduce the amount of sweat produced by the body for up to six months.
