According to the American Diabetes Association, approximately 30 million people in the United States have diabetes, and studies have shown that hearing loss is nearly twice as prevalent in those individuals. Audiology Unlimited, a Washington, DC metro business providing audiology and hearing aid services, suggests that everyone have regular hearing tests, but particularly those with diabetes.

While audiologists are not entirely certain of the reason behind the link between diabetes and hearing loss, speculations suggest that the high blood glucose levels associated with diabetes may cause damage to blood vessels in the inner ear, and that some of the medications that diabetic individuals take could negatively impact one’s hearing over time. Another fact noted by the studies is that hearing exams are done infrequently at best, and usually per request of the patient rather than the patient’s primary care doctor. For this reason, it is important that individuals (especially those with diabetes) take charge of their aural health and speak to their doctors about having regular hearing exams.

Hearing protection is of the utmost importance among the diabetic population. For this reason, it's important for diabetic individuals to use earplugs when exposed to prolonged periods of loud noise, to wear ear protectors when operating or standing near machinery, and to opt for over-the-ear headphones rather than in-ear styles. Also, don’t forget to give your hearing a break sometimes. If you are exposed to a prolonged period of loud noise, such as attending a concert, allow your ears to recover by taking a break of silence.
