With the start of the New Year, it's time to start thinking about tax preparation. During the filing season tax scammers are on the prowl. Here are the four biggest scams you should be on the lookout for this year:

  • Identity Theft: Sometimes you discover a phony tax return has been filed using your name and social security number.  Scammers try to file fake tax returns in the hopes of getting some money out of the IRS. If this has happened to you, call the IRS Identity Protection Specialized Unit, so you don’t miss out on your refund.tax preparation
  • Telephone Scams: Scammers will often call unsuspecting victims, claiming to be from the IRS. They may sound very convincing, even to the point of creating a call center background noise, but don't fall for it. They may claim you owe money, demand payment, threaten you with arrest and collection action.  Hang up the phone, take a breath and call the IRS to report the scam.  If you know, in fact you do owe the IRS, you can call and verify the status of your account.
  • Phishing: Scammers know that not everyone answers their phones so they may send a fake email or create a fake website to obtain confidential information. The IRS would never request sensitive information via email. If you receive an email, do not reply and report the scam to the IRS.
  • Posing As Tax Preparers: Don’t discuss your tax return with someone over the telephone that you do not know. If they are soliciting to prepare your return with offers of free money or a deal that seems too good to be true, common sense tells you it probably is a scam.
