So, you’ve been scheduled for a Sleep Evaluation and you’re not sure what to expect.  Let’s go over the process...it’s not bad, difficult or scary!!!

The Sleep Evaluation is an appointment scheduled for 40 minutes with Patrick Burns, DO.  Dr. Burns specializes in General Neurology as well as Sleep Medicine.  During this Evaluation, he will go over your health history, your sleeping problems, current symptoms, examine your neck/throat and determine if an overnight sleep study is needed.

If the sleep study is needed, we will schedule it at that appointment, give a packet of information, answer any questions and give a tour of the Sleep Lab.  We will also check with your insurance prior to the test.

Sleep studies are scheduled Sunday through Friday with 2 arrival times, 8:00 pm and 9:00 pm.  To have enough time for the diagnostic study, lights must be out and the testing started by 11:00 pm.  You will be woken up at 6:00 am and the technician will briefly go over your study.  Patients will need to leave by 7:00 am...our night technicians are ready to go home to bed!

If you are diagnosed with Sleep Apnea, we will make arrangements with the Durable Medical Equipment company of your choice to have you set up on a CPAP machine.  Depending on your insurance, you could also get set up on CPAP before you leave the sleep lab in the morning.  We will go over that information during the tour of the sleep lab at your evaluation appointment.

After your sleep study report is ready, one of our staff will give you a call to answer any questions you may have and see how you are doing.  At this point you will either be scheduled for a follow up appointment with Dr. Burns or a second sleep study will be scheduled.  If this second study is scheduled, it is to find your proper pressure setting for the CPAP.  You can decide at that point if you would like to follow up with Dr. Burns to go over your Diagnostic Study or wait and review both studies at once.
