For those who love flowers, winter can seem like a dismal time. Many beautiful plants don’t flourish in the cold, and the Cincinnati climate isn’t always ideal at this period of year. Northgate Greenhouses is here to answer your questions about what to expect from your flowers in winter and beyond.

Which Flowers Will Survive The Winter?

Which Flowers Bloom Indoor During Winter?

Indoor plants that do well around Cincinnati are cyclamen, amaryllis, and poinsettias, as well as the classic outdoor bulbs snowdrops and crocuses that herald the end of winter. Other possibilities you may want to try out include winter pansies and Christmas rose (or hellebore).

Why Do Some Flowers Flourish While Others Suffer?

All plants are different. Cold temperatures can seriously damage fragile flowers, and the dim days and long nights make it hard for a plant to get the sunlight it needs. But don’t worry; many indoor plants rest during the winter months. Cutting the amount of fertilizer and water at this time is a good idea. Your indoor flowers and plants will naturally respond to spring’s longer days. This is the time to start introducing fertilizer again.

Which Flowers Will Survive & Come Back In Spring?

FlowersPerennials lie dormant throughout the cold months, but they’ll be back with bright colors and beautiful fragrances when the warmth returns. Flower bulbs like daffodils, tulips, and hyacinth will also return in the early spring. When summer arrives, you may see other perennials, like peonies, lavender and echinacea.

How Can You Improve Your Flowers’ Chances?

The best thing to do is know your local climate zone. Choose plant varieties that will survive in colder weather, and provide 3 to 4 inches of mulch prior to December 1st.
