According to the EPA, the average American household spends more than $2,200 a year on their energy bills, and almost half of this goes to heating and cooling. So, it’s no wonder more people are switching over to energy-efficient HVAC products. The pros at B&B Plumbing and Heating are dedicated to helping Oxford, OH and other SW Ohio residents save money on their energy bills.

Here are three products that will increase the efficiency of your HVAC system:

  • HVACProgrammable Thermostats: A programmable thermostat is useful if you’re away from home for set periods of time during the week. You can program the thermostat to adjust the temperature at specific times during the day. This way, you can lower or raise the temperature when you’re not at home, ensuring you’re not wasting energy when nobody’s in the house.  Be sure to ask B&B’s advice on how much you can efficiently lower your temperature, and how quickly your unit will come back to set temperature...we have occasionally had customers who think they will save money by lowering their thermostat 10-15 degrees at night.  They’ve spent more $ getting the unit back to “normal” than they saved during the period it was low.  Lowering a unit 5-8 degrees is probably OK; again, ask us to comment based on the type of HVAC unit you have.
  • Air Filters: Your HVAC system’s air filters should be changed every month, especially during the winter and summer, when you use your HVAC unit the most.  When your air filter is clogged, it uses more energy to push the air through, which results in a higher energy bill. (This is also hard on the mechanism and can cause motors or other components to fail prematurely).  Changing your filter consistently can save you 5% to 15% on your utility bill each year.
  • A New HVAC Unit: Does your current system frequently needs repairs. Is your heat pump more than 12 years old, or your furnace more than 18 years old?  If so, you may want to consider making a change to a new, energy-efficient HVAC system.  B&B’s estimates are free, and we include the amount of energy savings you can expect to see, so you can pick the system that delivers the maximum payoff for you.  Separately, if you only have a few rooms that are too cold or too warm, we can help you think through ductwork options and/or a new ductless HVAC unit like a Mitsubishi or LG.
