Perhaps you’re aware of how energy efficient metal roofs are over the summer, but did you know they’re also efficient in winter? It may seem counterintuitive at first, but metal roofs actually keep homes very warm on winter nights. H & H Metal Products is here to explain how it works.

Brought to you by the best metal roofing contractors in Savannah, TN, are the details of why you might be better off with a metal roof in the winter:

Metal Roof Researchmetal roof

If you’re only looking at surface temperatures, you would be correct in thinking that metal would get colder than asphalt shingles. According to a study requested by the U.S. Department of Energy, the surface temperature of metal roofs was a little bit colder at night than asphalt shingles, but it’s the area below that matters the most. The air below the metal roofs in the study ended up staying above outdoor temperatures, while the area below asphalt shingles stayed cold. The metal roofs lost about half as much heat as the shingle roofs!

Proper Materials

Not just any metal roof will yield the above results. If you want to reap the energy-saving benefits of a metal roof, it is imperative that your metal roofing contractors use the correct materials and procedures. For instance, felt-based underlayments are not suitable for a human dwelling, as they allow heat to escape. Instead, a good roofing company will recommend a synthetic roof underlayment for your home.
