Summer's nearly over and it's time for back-to-school at A Brighter Rainbow Learning Center, a leading preschool and daycare center in the Boston area. Back-to-school can sometimes be an anxious time, specially for preschoolers, but you can help your child look forward to it by falling back into school year routines.

In the week or two before school reopens, reestablish your pre- and after-school routines:

  1. Ease your kids into earlier bedtimes and morning wake-up times.
  2. Plan school-day breakfasts with your kids, combining healthy eating with the fun of taking responsibility for their meals.
  3. Shop with your kids for school supplies. Help them pick out their favorite characters or stories, so they will be taking familiar faces with them to school.
  4. Help your kids pack their bags for school the evening before.
  5. Make your mornings easier by planning school wardrobes a week in advance and keeping clothes, shoes and socks handy.
  6. Stop by and meet the new teacher, and introduce your child to the new classroom. If possible, arrange a play date with other preschoolers in the same class.
  7. And always, read to your kids! Or let them read to you! This ensures the continuity of the learning process, and makes transitions earlier. Teaching them the habit of enjoying reading and learning may be the best gift you ever give your kids.
