When it comes to basic car maintenance, it can be hard to tell exactly when certain things need to be done. And, to make matters worse, it’s not usually obvious for the non-mechanic how soon something needs to be taken care. Fortunately, the car maintenance experts at Superlube Complete Car Care in Northern Ohio have put together a handy guide for one of these tasks: the windshield wipers.
How To Tell When Your Windshield Wipers Need To Be Replaced
How Old Are They?
Windshield wipers typically last anywhere from six to twelve months, depending on a variety of factors (more on those below). Regardless, it’s a good idea to jot down a note whenever you replace your blades and toss it in your glove box for reference.
Have You Cleaned Them?
If your wiper blades aren’t performing well, you can try giving them a rub down with some rubbing alcohol to see if that does the trick. If not, it might be time to replace.
What Climate Do You Live In?
Your climate type can influence the life of your wiper blades. Obviously, wet climates will get more use, but arid, sunny climates can also break down the rubber in the blades, even if they’re not being used.
What Material Are They?
Rubber blades are the cheapest and last the shortest. Halogen-hardened rubber blades last a little longer and silicon blades last longest of all. Consider what your wiper blades are made of when replacing them.
Are There Streaks?
If your wiper blades are leaving your windshield streaked, or with large, unwiped sections, then it’s definitely time replace your blades.
