What Are the Differences Between Mild Steel & Stainless Steel?, Wood, Missouri

If you are an amateur craftsman or need to complete a project that requires metal working, you may be wondering about the different types of steel. There are four main types of steel, with varying subcategories that explain different qualities about the metals.

Douglass Steel has been a steel fabricator and distributor in Mountain Grove, MO, for over 50 years, and their metal experts help you to distinguish between two common forms of steel — stainless and mild:

  • steelDifferent Alloying Elements: One of the primary ways to distinguish between different types of steel is to know the alloying elements used. Mild (or carbon) steel uses only iron and carbon as the alloying elements. Stainless steel contains other alloying elements, such as chromium and nickel.
  • Corrosion Resistance: Stainless steel gets its name from its stain- and corrosion-resistant properties. Stainless steel holds up well against most elements, including heat and moisture, and will rust slower than other metals. Mild steels do not contain the same resistance and are more susceptible to damage from the elements.
  • Malleability: Carbon steel is much more malleable than stainless steel. Stainless steel is generally harder than mild or carbon steel, which makes it more difficult to hammer down or roll out.
  • Welding Capabilities: Welding mild steels is not always an easy task, and special precautions have to be taken if its carbon content is greater than 0.3%. However, welding mild steel will typically present fewer problems than welding stainless steel, which may suffer heat cracks.
  • Uses: Due to differences in their hardness and corrosion resistance, carbon steel and stainless steel are used for different functions. Stainless steel is primarily used for cutlery and straps due to its hardness and its ability to withstand different elements. The ferromagnetism and stiffness of mild steel mean it is great for motors and electrical appliances.
