When winter rolls around, it’s time to break out the hats, gloves, boots, and of course, your warmest coat. But for all the thought you put into your outfit to battle the wind and snow, how often do you do the same for your car? After 25 years of experience providing premium driver's education classes, Sure-Drive Driver’s Training encourages all students to prepare their vehicle before doing any winter driving. By following these three simple tips, you can roam the winter roads with confidence.

3 Tips To Drive Safely This Winter

1. Get A Thorough Maintenance Check

Regular checkups at a certified auto shop are instrumental in maintaining your car’s overall health. However, scheduling a top-to-bottom maintenance check before winter arrives is especially important. This tuneup can alert you to any existing or potential issues that need attention before you hit the icy roads. When it comes to your tires, have the tread and air pressure checked to ensure the highest level of traction, and replace your set if necessary. Topping off your windshield wiper fluid and switching to a winter-grade oil are also excellent ways to winterize your car from the inside out.

2. Pack An Emergency Kit

drivers educationWhether your car gets stuck in a ditch or you suffer an accident, an emergency kit can offer all the essentials you’ll need until help arrives. Pack a sturdy container with blankets, extra clothing and gloves, flashlights, flares, and non-perishable snacks. Jumper cables, ice scrapers, salt, and a radio or backup cell phone are also wise to have on hand.

3. Pack Kitty Litter Or Sand

If you’re unable to get traction on the road or an icy patch of grass, sand or kitty litter will be your secret weapon. Simply sprinkle some in front of your tires to give them the extra “grab” they need to get moving.
