What are the Differences Between Drivelines? , Brockton, Massachusetts

Car manufacturers advertise all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive in their vehicles, but not all car owners actually know what these distinctions entail. What does it mean to have one driveline versus the others, and which driveline is right for you? Woodward’s Auto Parts is an auto parts store in Brockton, MA. Below, their automobile experts explain the differences between these four drivelines.

All-Wheel Drive

Although this particular driveline does not have the handling and control of an off-road vehicle, all-wheel drive systems feature three differentials which allow the driver a great deal of control over the vehicle. The gears of the differentials allow for the vehicle’s power to be split between all four wheels without sacrificing traction or mobility. Because this driveline is the most sophisticated of the bunch, it can also be the most costly to repair.

This driveline—commonly used in performance vehicles and trucks—transfers power to rear wheels, allowing for quick responsiveness. However, rear-wheel drivelines sacrifice some stability and are therefore impractical if you live in an area with unfavorable weather conditions.

Front-Wheel Drive

Front-wheel drive is a good, reliable system for most drivers. The transmission transfers power to the front wheels, making it lightweight, reliable, and fuel efficient. Additionally, front-wheel drive vehicles are significantly more reliable than rear-wheel drive vehicles in snowy or icy conditions although not as reliable as an all-wheel drive system.

Four-Wheel Drive

Four-wheel drive systems are used in all-terrain and off-road vehicles. Using what is known as a transfer case, a four-wheel drive system transfers power from the transmission to all four wheels. Vehicles that use a four-wheel driveline are great for driving through snow, mud, gravel and more. However, their speed is limited, and you can expect a loss of traction when you turn.
