Arthritis Prevention Tips From KY’s Top Orthopaedic Surgeons, Lexington-Fayette, Kentucky

For many Americans—especially older ones—arthritis pain is a fact of life. While for some people, eventual arthritis can’t be avoided, there are thankfully lots of lifestyle changes you can make to prevent this disease from taking hold and, if you’re already a sufferer, to slow its progression. Here, the Kentucky-based arthritis experts at Lexington Orthopaedic Associates share their top tips for arthritis prevention.

Kentucky Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Top Tips for Arthritis Prevention

Improve Your Diet

You are what you eat, so a poor diet will make it harder for your joints to stay strong and healthy. Healthy fats like those contained in fish, avocados, and nuts help reduce inflammation, which will soothe arthritic joints and help the disease from developing to begin with. Include healthy fats in your meals at least twice per week to reap the benefits.

Manage Your Weight

In addition to having a good diet, your overall weight has a huge effect on whether or not arthritis develops, and how severe it becomes. The heavier you are, the more stress it puts on your joints; especially your knees. That’s why if you’re overweight, one of the first steps you should take to ease arthritis symptoms is to lose those extra pounds.

ArthritisStrength Training

With stronger muscles, your joints will have more support and will be able to withstand more stress. Thankfully, becoming stronger will also help you lose extra weight from body fat, making exercise a multi-pronged step in terms of preventing or reducing arthritis. Stronger muscles also make you less injury-prone, which means you have less chance of having to visit an orthopaedic surgeon to repair joints or get surgery such as a knee replacement.

Of course, sometimes even the best diet and lifestyle aren’t enough to completely prevent arthritis from taking hold.  When that day comes, get in touch with an orthopaedic surgeon at Lexington Orthopaedic Associates by calling them at (859) 277-5703. Their compassionate, professional doctors are experts in everything from arthroscopy to hip replacement. To learn more about their team, visit their website.
