Testing for drugs and alcohol is a common practice in the workplace. Depending on the line of work, employees may be asked to take a routine drug test to help determine their ability to comply with company protocol or to fulfill the job requirements. To determine whether alcohol or traces of drugs are present in a person’s body, employers may use an alcohol lab test via a urine sample, also known as a urinalysis. This test can detect the presence of alcohol in the urine up to 48 hours after consumption. Artesia Drug and Alcohol Screening in Artesia, NM, is a trusted drug and alcohol screening facility. They offer a broad range of services including drug testing, alcohol testing, and genetic testing.

alcohol lab testSubjecting someone to an alcohol lab test can happen for several reasons. For example, if someone is in rehab, where they may be required to remain abstinent, it would not be out of the ordinary to routinely test them. Other scenarios may include a court ordered mandate or monitoring employees in the workplace.

How long alcohol remains in a person urine depends on a couple of different things. How much alcohol was consumed, how much they have eaten, and the person’s height and weight can all contribute. Depending on these factors, detecting alcohol in the urine is possible between 12 hours and 48 hours after consumption.

When performing an alcohol lab test, some labs are now using a method called “EtG,” or Ethyl Glucuronide. This test can detect alcohol up to 80 hours after the alcohol has metabolized, which is much longer than a standard urinalysis. EtG works by detecting the amount of Ethyl Glucuronide in the body. EtG is a biomarker which signals whether the body has recently metabolized alcohol, rather than testing for the alcohol itself, which makes passing an alcohol lab test much more challenging.
