Maintaining proper dental care is important for everyone, including your children! According to Discovery Dental—a trusted family dentist in Eagle River, AK—the earlier children learn this, the less likely they will be to develop dental health issues as they age.

With 2017 quickly approaching, now is an excellent time for your child to make a few resolutions that will improve their oral care habits in the coming year. Here are a few simple goals this family dentist recommends:

  • Eat More Healthy Fruits & Vegetables: Not all dental care is reliant on brushing and flossing. Explain to your child that when they eat more leafy greens and vitamin-rich produce, their teeth will grow strong. Healthy eating will also help to protect their teeth from bad bacteria—such as that resulting from an excess of sweets—and prevent their adult teeth from falling out.
  • family dentistMake An Effort To Floss Every Day: Your child might not mind brushing their teeth, but many often forget to floss. Usually, this is because they don’t understand the importance of flossing. To correct this, explain to them how the food they eat throughout the day can get trapped in the tight spaces between their teeth. Many times, a toothbrush alone isn’t powerful enough to remove this food, and, after a while, it will form a substance known as plaque. When plaque arrives, it will harm their teeth, lead to cavities and bad breath, and possibly even cause their teeth to fall out. If this happens, they will be spending a lot more time at the dental office.
  • Limit Sugary Beverages & Drink More Water: As you are explaining bad bacteria and plaque to your child, don’t forget to mention how germs can form by drinking too many sodas or sweetened beverages. While four to six ounces of juice or soda a day is alright, drinking water the rest of the day will help to wash away the harmful bacteria that sugar encourages.

To help maintain your child’s smile and dental health, don’t forget to schedule professional cleanings with your family dentist at least twice a year. To schedule an appointment with Dental Discovery, call (907) 622-5437, or visit their website.
