If you rip a favorite shirt or discover a tiny hole in a pair of jeans, the team at 6 Avenue Tailor knows a few quick and easy tricks that will save your treasured garments. For years, the Manhattan-based company has been providing New Yorkers with high-quality sewing alterations, leather repair, and anything else needed to keep clothes looking great.

New York City’s leading tailor shares three simple sewing alterations to repair your damaged clothing:

  • tailored clothingPatching Holes In Denim: If you’ve worn your favorite jeans to the point that the denim is starting to thin and form holes, a tiny patch will easily cover the damage. First, trim away frayed threads around the hole. Next, cut a patch of denim in a similar color to cover the hole. Place the patch over the hole and secure it in place with pins. Using a zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine, sew the patch along the perimeter of the hole. Sewing denim by hand can be tricky, so if you don’t have a sewing machine, call 6 Avenue Tailor for help.
  • Mending Ripped Seams: A ripped seam in your favorite shirt or pair of slacks is easier to repair than you might think. All you need to do is select thread in a shade that matches the article of clothing’s dominant color. Next, turn the garment inside out and cut away loose threads around the tear. To make sure you sew along the original stitch, draw a guideline with a marking pencil. Next, make a backstitch a half-inch before the rip and continue to stitch along the line. If you don’t trust your sewing skills or are working with delicate fabric, call 6 Avenue Tailor for assistance. With more than 30 years of experience, the seamstress team will flawlessly repair shearling, satin, and any other delicate materials and provide tips for at-home care
  • Creating The Perfect Hem: You can easily avoid tripping on too-long pants by creating the perfect hem. First, try on the pants and determine the perfect length for the cuff. Once you’ve made the cuff, take the pants off and place them on an ironing board. Use a pin to mark the new hemline and then unravel the pants. Using tailor’s chalk, draw a line across the pant leg on both sides. Transfer the line to the other pant leg. Next, cut the pants less than an inch from the chalk lines. After you make the cuts, roll the pant legs up at the chalk lines and secure in place with pins and go over the cuffs with an iron. Turn the pants right side out and use a sewing machine to create a sturdy stitch along the hemlines. If you don’t have the tools for the job, call 6 Avenue Tailor for help.
