With fall well on its way out, winter is just around the corner. Before we know it, the roads will be covered in ice and snow, and our cars need to be ready. If the idea of winterizing your vehicle seems intimidating, our staff at Fort Mitchell Garage in Park Hills, KY, wants to assure you that it’s not.

To ensure your car is ready for the winter, we suggest doing the following:

  • Refer To The Manual: Since every make and model of vehicle is different, the first thing you should always do is consult the owner’s manual for specific advice.
  • Address Performance Issues: If you’ve had difficulties starting your car, stalling, or rough idling, take it to the auto repair shop as soon as possible. Colder temperatures usually exacerbate these issues.
  • Auto RepairUse The Correct Tires: For many people, all-season tires will suffice, but if you tend to drive on difficult terrain, you may need winter-specific tires. Regardless if you change them out, make sure the pressure and tread depth are adequate.
  • Prepare The Battery: Cold temperatures can wreak havoc on batteries, so you’ll need to make sure your car’s battery is strong enough for the season. If there is any corrosion, don’t forget to clean it off.
  • Check Coolant Levels & Antifreeze: To keep your engine running smoothly amidst the freezing temperatures, you'll need the right amount of both these fluids.
  • Update Windshield Wipers & Washer Fluid: Replace any cracked or dried out wipers and consider changing the washer fluid. Winter washer fluid has deicing properties to loosen up any ice or snow.
  • Switch To Winter-Specific Oil: When the temperatures drop, oil tends to thicken. When it's time to get an oil change, consider switching to an oil made for winter weather.
