For those who like spending time outdoors, a patio can be a wonderful addition to their home. However, when they are not properly maintained, patios can easily succumb to the natural elements. T & L Tree and Landscape—New York’s top lawn care and lot clearing company—suggests all homeowners planning upcoming holiday parties get started on their patio repairs and improvements now if they want their outdoor area to look its best for their guests.

The majority of patios these days are made out of concrete slabs and surfaces. Over time these pieces suffer from erosion and settlement and being out in daily weather. These issues will eventually lead to cracks and wobbly surfaces that are unflattering to see and could cause unaware guests to trip when visiting the home.

For homeowners that do not want to experience either of these scenarios they can repair their concrete patio by doing one of the following options:

  • Mudjacking: This process requires injecting a mortar-based mixture into the holes and cracks of the patio to fill all the empty spaces and pump enough force under the slabs to raise them up. This pushes uneven areas closer together and closes all visible holes and cracks. The mixture will then harden to prevent the slabs any future moving or rocking.
  • lawn carePolymer Slab Lifting: A similar solution to mudjacking only the material pumped into the holes is lighter, expands faster, and has fewer of the follow-up issues that mudjacking has. Polymer slab lifting is also a much cleaner process as the material can be washed away afterward using only water.
  • Resurfacing: This is a good option for those with minor patio cracks or settling as it will only cover up the issues and not fix them. Resurfacing when there are severe voids or wobbles is not recommended as it could create a more dangerous area for people to walk on.
  • Replacement: Although it is the most expensive and time-consuming option, replacing the patio should be considered when severe cracks and settlement are present. This will require relocating all patio furniture and removing any plants and landscaping around the area until the project is finished.
