A pediatric dentist specializes in the care, development, and formation of children’s teeth, from infancy through adolescence. To become an expert in the rapid changes of children’s teeth as they grow, a pediatric dentist also takes part in two to three extra years of specialized training after dental school. Carolyn B. Crowell, DMD, & Associates in Avon, OH, are dedicated to providing the best possible kid-friendly dental experience for their young patients, as well as helping them learn how to practice oral hygiene and prevent disease.

Dental Care for Growing Kids

1. Infant

Your child should begin seeing a dentist around the time they turn one. Dr. Crowell believes that it is important for the child to see the same pediatric dentist regularly so that she may monitor and track the child’s progress. Babies will usually get their first teeth between 6 and 8 months of age. Children should not go to sleep with a bottle filled with milk or other sugary liquids, as this can cause baby bottle tooth decay. Gently wash your baby’s gums with water and a soft cloth after each feeding.

2. Child

Pediatric DentistChildren should begin brushing their teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-size amount of toothpaste if they are between the ages of 2 and 5. Parents should brush their children’s teeth until they are old enough to do a thorough job. Children should also begin to floss as soon as their teeth start touching. Children can prevent cavities by brushing twice a day and using a fluoride toothpaste.

3. Adolescent

Adolescents should eat a healthy diet and avoid candy, sodas, and sports drinks, as the high sugar content can cause cavities. Adolescence is also the time to look into orthodontia. Dr. Crowell recommends that children get their first orthodontic screening at age 7 to identify any problems that can be corrected early on. To care for braces, adolescents should brush thoroughly 4-5 times per day and avoid sticky or hard food and candy.

Children experience vastly different dental care needs as they grow. Your child should see a pediatric dentist at least twice a year to prevent disease and make sure their oral development is on track.
