For children of any age, math can be a challenging subject. The key to fostering math understanding is to make the numbers and theories practical, engaging, and fun. Below are three preschool activities to help encourage your child's mathematical abilities.

3 Preschool Activities To Boost Math Skills

preschool activities1. Making Shapes

Spatial skill and comprehension are important parts of a solid math foundation. Using cutout construction paper shapes or toy blocks, have your child create new shapes and designs. Ask them to give names to these new creations. This activity also inspires creativity and imaginative solutions.

2. A Cleanup Game

When you're cleaning up with your preschool-aged child, tell them you will clean up one category of items while they clean up another. For example, you will gather together all of the puzzle pieces and put them back in the box while they put away all of the building blocks. After this part of the cleanup is complete, have your child assign both of you the next category of items to be cleaned up. This preschool activity helps develop planning skills and teaches how to match like items.

3. Finding Patterns

Sequencing is a crucial part of developing both math and reading ability. Next time you see your child grouping disparate items together, engage them in a conversation about how they decided on the groups they did. What patterns do they see? What was their rationale for grouping certain items together? Does size or color play a role? Then, make new pattern suggestions.
