Tow trucks are not “one size fits all.” In fact, there are various types of towing vehicles built for several different uses. If you’re stuck on the side of the road and call a towing service, knowing the different kinds of vehicles available will help you make an informed decision about what kind you need.

towingThe three main kinds of tow trucks are flatbed, hook and chain, and wheel-lift. Hook and chain tow trucks are not used frequently since they have the tendency to cause additional damage to a vehicle. If you’re concerned about scratches or dents on your vehicle, you may want to steer clear of the hook and chain and request a wheel-lift truck instead.

A wheel-lift tow truck works on a similar principle as the hook and chain but is much safer for cars. After attaching a yoke to the front axle, the entire front of the car is lifted off the ground for a safe tow, with only the two back tires on the ground during the process. This type of tow truck works well if the car being towed is in decent shape and you don’t have to travel far.

Flatbed tow trucks, on the other hand, have a large, empty bed in the back with an adjustable ramp to load a vehicle on. When the ramp is adjusted to hit the ground, you can drag or drive a car onto the flatbed for transport. This towing vehicle is safe and works for light and heavy towing needs.
