For Hawaii, a state unique in its diverse climate and geologic conditions, maintaining wastewater treatment systems is a delicate matter. The Hawaii Department of Health is taxed with the responsibility of approving septic system permits, and home and business owners who install wastewater treatment systems on their properties must meet certain requirements.

You’ll find full details about those requirements on the Hawaii State website, but here’s a quick overview:

  • wastewater treatment systemDepth To Water Table: Most types of wastewater treatment systems expel the treated water either at or near ground level, allowing it to be dispersed through soil. If the groundwater in the area is shallow, that treated water is discharged almost directly into it. To prevent groundwater contamination, wastewater treatment systems must be installed above the groundwater table.
  • Impermeable Formations: The percolation process where the treated water is discharged into the soil is an essential part of proper waste management. If the soil is not permeable, however, the water will pond and turn into surface runoff. This puts public health at risk. The Department of Health has established minimum percolation rates for wastewater treatment systems, and to be approved, the soil must meet certain permeability requirements.
  • Steep Terrain: The terrain will also affect the water disposal system. If a wastewater treatment system relies on gravity to direct the treated water, a steep terrain will complicate the process. In most cases, the area for disposal is required to be terraced or stepped to ensure percolation occurs at the proper rate. Buffering is also necessary to keep the water from resurfacing once it reaches the bottom of the slope.

In total, there are nine main issues concerning requirements for on-site wastewater treatment systems. It’s best to consult with a professional before planning for a new waste management system and filling out the permit applications.
