Not only is fish healthy and packed with nutrients, it also makes a delicious meal. Hawaii is home to some of the freshest seafood in the world, and Tropic Fish Hawaii is the premier resource for the freshest selection of both local and imported fish. A part of CMU & Associates, Hawaii’s largest seafood distributor, Tropic Fish Hawaii sells locally to restaurants, hotels, airlines and supermarkets, as well as internationally to several major cities.

While seafood is a dining staple year-round, different varieties of fish are in season during particular times of the year. The experts at Tropic Fish Hawaii know the best fish to eat based on the season to ensure quality and freshness. Here, they share their picks:

  • Winter: The cooler, winter months of December through February are the perfect time for big eye tuna, or ahi, which is always a crowd favorite. If you’re looking for more variety, it’s also a great time of year for hapu’upu’u, more commonly known as grouper and sea bass.
  • Spring: As we enter the months of March, April and May, different varieties of fish come into season. This time of year is great for mahi mahi, often used in many signature Hawaiian seafood dishes. It’s also a good time of year to incorporate nairagi, or striped bass, into your selection.
  • fishSummer: The warm months of June, July and August are prime season for yellowfin tuna. Hebi, a mild flavored spearfish, is also a popular choice of many fine restaurants throughout Hawaii during summer.
  • Fall: The fall months of September, October and November are peak season for two other types of tuna—aku, known as skipjack tuna, and tombo, or albacore tuna. It’s also a great time of year for ono, or wahoo fish. With ono meaning “delicious” or “good” in Hawaiian, it’s no surprise that this fish has long been a favorite of locals.
