It’s not unusual for temperatures to drop well below freezing in Troy, MO, during winter, so homeowners with swimming pools should take steps now to prepare them for the coming months. With more than 30 years of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing pools, The Pool Guys says that owners of above-ground pools should follow many of the same steps as owners of in-ground pools, with a few exceptions.

5 Ways to Winterize Your Above-ground Pool

Clean The Area

If your pool is enclosed by a deck or patio, you should start by cleaning that area. Sweep all dirt and leaves away, and prune any overhead trees or flowers. Why? The point is to keep debris from entering the pool and causing algae buildup while it’s covered.

Clean The Pool

You should use a leaf skimmer or pool rake to remove all debris from inside your swimming pool. You should also brush the interior walls and floor of your pool with a pool brush to prevent algae.

Treat The Pool

PoolsThere are many different chemicals available to treat the water in your pool for winter. You’ll need an algaecide, a metal-removing treatment, and oxidizing shock. Make sure each is evenly distributed, and follow the instructions on when to administer them.

Run The Pump

For at least an hour after adding the chemicals to your pool, you need to run the pool pump. This will help them properly circulate and be more effective after the cover is applied.

Cover Your Pool

Lower the water levels approximately six inches below the skimmer. Insert a winterize plug into the inlet, and then cover the pool, making sure no debris accidentally gets into the pool. Secure the cover with above-ground wall bags if needed.
