For many people, glasses are a great choice for improving their vision. But for others who don’t want to worry about wearing glasses on their face, breaking them, or misplacing them, contact lenses make an excellent alternative.

Eye specialist, Dr. Ron Sealock, of Dothan, AL, says if you’re tired of wearing classes, transitioning to contact lenses is very simple, only requiring a single visit to the eye doctor to make the switch. However, keep in mind that no matter how long you’ve worn glasses, there will be some differences you’ll notice when transitioning to contact lenses.

To help you make the switch from glasses to contact lenses, consider these five tips from Dr. Sealock:

  • Wash Your Hands: You should never handle contact lenses without washing your hands with warm water and a mild soap. Touching contacts with unwashed hands, even if you think they’re clean, can introduce unwanted bacteria into the eye.
  • Use The Right Contact Solution: There are two main types of contact solutions available: those for soft contacts and those for hard ones, also known as gas permeable lenses. Make sure you purchase the right type of solution for your lenses. If you’re unsure of which products to use, consult your eye doctor for help.
  • contact lenses Follow Care Instructions: Always follow your eye doctor’s instructions on how to care for your contact lenses. Never switch them from eye to eye, and remember to replace them when necessary. Some contact lenses should be replaced daily, whereas others only every couple of weeks. Gas permeable lenses last much longer, sometimes up to several years.
  • Remove Your Contacts Before Bed: Never wear your contact lenses to sleep. Even if you plan to take a quick nap, you should remove your lenses before shutting your eyes. Sleeping with contact lenses in can cause eye irritation. Additionally, it’s important to let your eyes breathe every day.
  • Be Patient: Finally, it’s important to be patient with yourself when making the transition to contact lenses from glasses. Your eyes will need a bit of time to adjust, and it will take you a little while to develop a routine that works well for you. Know that it takes time to get used to wearing contact lenses, so try not to feel too overwhelmed.
