Whether you’re looking to fix your front walkway or are embarking on a project featuring concrete structures, it's important to understand the differences between the four major types of concrete in order to get the results you desire. The L. Suzio York Hill Companies of Meriden, CT, are your local concrete experts, and they have plenty to share on the subject.

Here’s what you should know about the four most common types of concrete:

  • Pervious Concrete: Made mostly of large aggregates, pervious concrete is designed to allow water to penetrate and drain through it for superior grip and drying time in critical areas. It is most often used for low-traffic roads, parking lots, and walkways.
  • Self-Consolidating Concrete: First formulated in 1986, self-consolidating concrete requires little vibration and compaction to eliminate the air pockets that result in cracks and defects after it has hardened. It’s useful when pouring forms and in other structural areas where the use of vibrating tools is limited.
  • concreteFiber-Reinforced Concrete: This type of concrete is generally used in applications where water seepage and shrinkage while drying are not desirable, such as in tunnels and highways. Fiber increases the density but not necessarily the strength of the product.
  • Ready-Mix Concrete: Ready-mix concrete products are large batches of concrete mixed to order at a factory and delivered to a worksite in the familiar trucks with rolling barrels. For many jobs, contractors prefer ready-mix concrete as opposed to producing it on site, which can result in inconsistencies.
