The beautiful colors of fall will automatically make your yard look beautiful, but that doesn’t mean you can afford to put off important landscape tasks. The Gardener, Columbia, MO’s leading landscaping and lawn service, understands that you take pride in your yard, which is why they’re committed to making sure all your hard work isn’t lost when winter comes.

landscapeThe Gardener combines quality landscaping service with a personal touch. With nearly 30 years of experience helping families in Columbia transform their yards into beautiful landscapes, The Gardener has the knowledge you need to prepare your yard for winter. Follow these three easy landscaping tips to ensure your yard will still be the prettiest one on the block when spring arrives:

  • Mulch: John Relles, owner of The Gardener and former city gardener for the Columbia park system, advises spreading two or three inches of fresh mulch around your trees and shrubs during the fall. It’s actually more important to mulch in the fall than in the spring, although you should do that too. Fall mulching protects the roots from freezing temperatures and can also help your trees and bushes retain water during a cold, dry winter.
  • Protect Fragile Shrubs: Winter storms and wind can damage those delicate shrubs that you worked so hard to keep healthy. During the fall, you should protect smaller plants by placing them under buckets or pots. You can wrap larger shrubs in burlap and place dead leaves around vulnerable trees.
  • Plant Fall Flowers: Now that your summer plants are beginning to lose their luster, replace them with colorful mums or other fall-friendly plants like aster, toad lily, goldenrod, or Russian sage. These plants will keep your landscape looking vibrant even after your trees begin to lose their pretty fall leaves.
