According to a survey conducted by the National Institute of Health Statistics, neck pain was reported to be the third most common type of pain people experience. Although neck pain caused by age-related wear and tear might not be under your control, the chiropractors at Southgate Chiropractic, located in Southgate, KY, would like you to know there are things you can do to decrease your risk.

Here are three sleeping tips these chiropractors recommend trying to avoid neck pain in the future:

  • Avoid Sleeping On Your Stomach: If at all possible, try to start each night sleeping on your back, as this provides the most support for your neck. Sleeping on your side is fine, too. The position you should try at all costs to avoid is sleeping on your stomach, as it puts significant strain on your spine. This is caused by the back being arched while the neck is turned.
  • neck painChoose A Pillow That Matches Your Sleeping Habits: If you sleep on your back, you need a different pillow than someone who sleeps on their side. Try choosing a pillow that provides support to the natural curve of your neck. If you do not want to purchase a pillow with an indentation for your head to rest in, try placing a small neck roll underneath a flatter or softer pillow. If you are prone to sleeping on your side, try to use a pillow that is higher under your neck than on your head. This way your spine can remain straight while you’re sleeping. It is also recommended for side sleepers to place a pillow between their knees to help keep the spine and pelvis in alignment.
  • Use A Book Prop: If you are among the countless people who like to read in bed, make sure you use a prop to hold your book up. This prevents you from using your arms to hold the book up or bending your neck forward. One good prop idea to use is a wedge-shaped pillow.
