It’s that time of the year when construction and material supply industries are searching for opportunities to attract the newest generation of skilled workers. October is unofficially known as “Careers in Construction Month,” an affair initiated by the National Center for Construction Education and Research in 2005 with the intention of fostering awareness of high demand professions available in construction.

Throughout the month, education and industry partners are set to host events that invite students to experience rewarding construction career paths. Sharing in this celebration is Meriden, CT’s The L. Suzio York Hill Companies, which has provided the local community with high-quality material supply like asphalt, crushed stone, and ready-mix concrete products for more than a century.

This nationwide campaign includes the following initiatives:

  • Promotion Of Construction Jobs: With the current shortage of craft and building professionals across the U.S., Careers in Construction Month serves as an opportunity for every state to boost construction careers in their respective regions. A state resident can file a proclamation declaring October as Careers in Construction Month for their governor to sign.

  • material supplyStudent Recruitment: Throughout the month, state agencies may conduct programs or events that aim to recruit and train high school students who express interest in a construction career. This type of event features various activities including workshops, on-the-job training, and job shadowing to facilitate career exploration.

  • Online Resources: The NCCER’s Build Your Future initiative (BYF) provides an array of online resources that assist organizations in participating in Careers in Construction Month. Some of these resources include “How To Plan a Career Day Guide,” “Helpful Hints for Career Day Exhibitors,” and “State Proclamation Guidelines,” among others.

As a long-time contributor to south central Connecticut’s construction industry, The L. Suzio York Hill Companies continues to provide excellent material supply services to residents and business owners, as well as employment opportunities to skilled laborers in the area.
