In today’s physician spotlight, Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates is pleased to introduce Dr. Colleen Swayze, MD, FACOG, a board-certified obstetrician gynecologist who has spent her entire post-resident career supporting the women of Butler County. A highly skilled care provider known for her compassionate manner and attention to her patients’ concerns and feelings, she offers her patients services that transcend the boundaries of traditional care.

Though Dr. Swayze has always had a passion for science, she didn’t originally anticipate a career in women’s health. In college, she pursued research in environmental engineering, biochemistry, and physiology, but the lab environment never captured her interest. She even landed an internship with NASA in Cape Canaveral on their contained ecological life support system (CELSS) project. Throughout college, she enjoyed volunteering at her college’s Sexuality Education Center, and her boyfriend—now husband—suggested she go to medical school. It turned out to be great advice, and she earned her Doctor of Medicine degree at Vanderbilt University in Nashville.

An avid runner, she feels happiest being active in the great outdoors. She also enjoys making global connections with people from around the world. In high school, she hosted an Australian exchange student with whom she’s kept in touch ever since—they even attended each other’s weddings in the U.S. and Australia! The Swayze family has also welcomed five German au pairs into their home over the years, and Dr. Swayze enjoys the challenge of learning German.

Above all, Dr. Swayze believes in the power of community, whether it’s raising scholarship money for women to advance their educations or providing a compassionate space where women can feel comfortable and supported as they address whatever issues they face in their lives. “It is rarely the prescription that I write,” she says. “It is the time I spend hearing the patient’s story that heals her. It is a privilege to be an intimate part of women’s lives.”
