In honor of Jewish Heritage month, Heights Chabad is throwing two celebratory events for families in the Jewish community.
During the month of May, Heights Chabad synagogue will be commemorating Lag BaOmer and celebrating Shavuot with an ice cream social over Memorial Day weekend.
Lag BaOmer, the 33rd day on the Omer count a fesetive day on the Jewish calendar, is Thursday, May 10. This day marks the anniversary of the passing of the great sage and mystic, Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai, author of the Zohar. It also commemorates the weeks between Passover and Shavuot when a plague raged amongst the disciples of the great sage Rabbi Akiva. Lag BaOmer marks the day when the dying ceased.
The Heights Chabad event celebrating Lag BaOmer, will be held the day before, on Wednesday, May 9. The event will include a bonfire, barbeque, s’mores, other food and drinks and a drum circle. The event begins at 7 p.m. and prices are set at $10 per person and $25 per family.
The second event Heights Chabad will be hosting this month is the Shavuot ice cream party at Bnai Avraham congregation. Shavuot is when God spoke the 10 commandments at Sinai, appointing the children as the guarantors that Israel would live by the laws of the Torah. Today, this is celebrated with a children\'s ice cream party, and on Sunday, May 27, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Heights Chabad will be celebrating the weekend with ice cream and great company.
Event location 117 Remsen Street Brooklyn, NY 11201 ( bet. Clinton & Henry Sts.)
