As a leading women’s health center in Fairfield and Liberty Township, Ohio, Obstetrics & Gynecology Associates aims to keep their local community aware of how to prevent, identify, and treat reproductive issues. One such condition is ovarian cancer. In honor of Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the team at OBGYN Associates would like to share some general information about the disease to keep patients informed this September and beyond.

What You Need To Know About Ovarian Cancer

What Is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer begins in a woman’s ovaries and can spread to the pelvis and abdominal region, at which point it can become deadly. When confined to the ovary, however, the odds of treating it successfully are far greater.

The disease doesn’t always present early symptoms, but in some cases, patients may notice persistent bloating, an urgent need to urinate, or abdominal/pelvic pain. Weight loss and changes in bowel movements can also be symptoms. If you notice these symptoms, make an appointment with your women’s health center as soon as possible.

How Do You Treat Ovarian Cancer?

Typically, chemotherapy and surgery are used to treat ovarian cancer, either separately or in conjunction with each other. As with all women’s reproductive diseases, taking a proactive approach is a patient’s best defense for avoiding ovarian cancer. Discuss your family history with your doctor, schedule regular screenings with a women’s health clinic, and notify your physician right away if you notice any changes.
