Local Veterinarians Explain 5 Types of Dangerous Foods for Your Pet, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin

Naturally, your pet is a valued member of your family. You most likely share long walks together and cuddle up on the couch with your favorite TV show. The local veterinarians at Wisconsin Rapids’ best animal hospital, Animal Medical And Surgical Clinic, explain a few things you shouldn’t share with your pet, namely, human food. For the sake of your pet’s safety, there are several foods to keep out of paw’s reach.

Many foods that are safe for human consumption can actually be poisonous to pets, including:

  • Fruits & Vegetables: Apple seeds, apricot pits, avocados, cherry pits, garlic, coffee beans, onions, mushrooms, grapes, raisins, peach pits, rhubarb leaves, potato leaves and stems, tomato leaves and stems, and mustard seed may all be potentially hazardous for your pet to consume.
  • Candy: Chocolate is highly toxic to cats, dogs, and ferrets, so definitely keep this cocoa treat away from your furry friends. Gum can cause digestive issues for your pal, so always keep your Trident pack out of reach. Plus, gum and an array of other candies usually contain the sweetener Xylitol, which is poisonous to your pet hospitalpet.
  • Nuts: Macadamia nuts and walnuts may be delicious to us, but these protein-packed nuts can be dangerous for your pet. Play it safe and keep them packed tightly away.
  • Coffee & Beer: The caffeine in your favorite morning beverages and the alcohol in your favorite nighttime beverages are definite no-nos for your friend. Beer also contains hops, which can be harmful to pets. Never tempt your pet by leaving out tea cups, coffee grounds, or glasses of wine.
  • Seasonings & Powders: Yeast dough, salt, and onion powder should be kept away from your furry friend to avoid a negative reaction. As mentioned before, the sweetener Xylitol is toxic to pets, so check ingredient lists after your pet has consumed something he shouldn’t have.

If your pet has consumed any of these foods, take them to your local animal hospital for a treatment. In Wisconsin Rapids, Animal Medical And Surgical Clinic is the premier source for veterinary care. For more information, call (715) 421-2006 or visit the animal hospital’s website
