Symptoms

Vitiligo initially is characterized by small sections of pale and discolored skin that typically grow in size. This condition commonly appears on areas of the skin that frequently are exposed to sunlight, such as the hands, arms, elbows, knees, and feet. It also can affect the mouth and eyes.

Causes

There is no known cause for vitiligo. Medical experts suspect it is the result of an autoimmune disorder that disrupts the body’s ability to manufacture melanin, which gives skin its color.

Treatment

Phototherapy with a UVB or UVA light is a common vitiligo treatment. A patient sometimes is given medication that improves the body’s sensitivity to ultraviolet light. Treatment results vary, however, and complete repigmentation is not yet possible.

Skin camouflage is a treatment that temporarily deposits pigment in affected skin and works best for milder forms of vitiligo. Topical corticosteroids are another option, as some studies indicate they may stop vitiligo patches from expanding, but they cannot be used on the face. In more extreme forms of the condition — where vitiligo affects more than 50% of the body — total skin depigmentation may be considered.
