The holiday season is upon us, and that means one thing, painful holiday shopping. Remember, the gifts aren’t going to buy themselves, you have to go and get them for loved ones. As anyone who has spent the day shopping can tell you, this can be a physically taxing time for the body. It’s not just your credit card getting a workout, it’s your body too.
Remember, it’s about giving, not receiving. But in this case you have to get before you give. These are simple exercises that can get you ready for the shopping blitz. Mind Over Matter's personal trainersrecommend these moves to ensure that will ensure your body can keep up with your Christmas list:
1. Holiday Walk:
If you have spent a busy day walking around with heavy shopping bags, you know how your shoulders can feel the brunt of that weight. To prepare for such, perform the following movement.
Carry 2 objects, equal in weight….either dumbbells or two heavy bags, one in each hand. Walk up and down either your gym or your apartment, taking normal strides.
Shoulders, Back, Hamstrings, Quads (for those experienced shoppers, try throwing in some steps)
You should walk comparable to the way you walk.
2. Christmas Tree Carry’s:
Sometimes the most arduous task of the holidays is getting the Christmas tree from Point A to Point B, whether that be your apartment or home. This move is designed to help you with that heavy lifting.
Stand with feet hip to shoulder length apart, hold two dumbbells in front of you, chest high. Squat down until your elbows hit your knees, stand up and extend your arm straight above your head.
Glutes, Quads, Hamstrings, Shoulders (for those experienced shoppers, do one arm at a time)
3. Fight the Crowd:
The biggest obstacle one can face on their shopping excursion is fighting the crowds to get to your gift of choice. This move will ensure that you will get to the front of the line every time.
Tie a resistance band around your waist, and have someone hold both handles standing directly behind you. Take two steps forward so that the band is nice and tight, and run in place for 30 seconds while the person behind you holds the bands.
Quads, Glutes, Hamstrings, Core (for those experienced shoppers, instead of running in place, try running the length of the room)
4. Gift Wrappers:
Last but not least, now that you’ve done all your shopping, you have the inconvenience of wrapping your gifts. Tedious it is, and your fingers and arms get quite the workout.
Start with two small dumbbells, one in each hand. Elbows 90 degrees at the sides of your body. Extend your arms to the sides, bring them back in, extend them forward, twist your wrists, bring them back and forth again.
Shoulders, Biceps, Forearms, Fingers (for the experienced shopper, try switching your grip around)
