Does your dog love long walks, playing on the beach—and have zero cares about getting dirty? Your fun-loving pup could probably use a good bath. All pets should get bathed periodically—even cats, sometimes—but many pet owners scratch their heads over which products are safe to use.

The veterinarians at Mililani Town Center Pet Clinic on the island of Oahu, HI, have a few suggestions on how to safely clean your pet from head to tail:

  • Don’t Use Human Shampoo On Pets: The first thing you should know is that shampoo designed for humans is too harsh for pets. It can dry out your pet’s skin and make them itch, so purchase a product specifically designed for your pet’s species. Don’t use soap either, as this is bad for hair in general.
  • veterinarianCheck The Ingredients: The pH level for a dog’s skin is different than it is for humans, but you can find veterinarian-recommended dog shampoo at most pet stores. While browsing these aisles, make sure to always check the ingredients lists to verify that a product is appropriate for your dog’s breed. The shampoo should also be free of strong fragrances or artificial colors, as these can irritate a dog’s skin and olfactory senses.
  • Some Essential Oils Are Fine & Even Helpful: You might find some dog shampoos containing lavender, eucalyptus oil, or chamomile. These ingredients are pleasant smelling for most people (and dog-friendly), and some of them—lavender in particular—repel fleas and other insects. Always ask your veterinarian about applying your own essential oils, but the small amounts found in commercial products are usually just enough.
