(Brooklyn, NY) - The historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church (85 South Oxford Street in Fort Greene Brooklyn), in concert with their new children’s music program, Music Where it Matters Most, is delighted to announce a special spring gala concert featuring the brand new One World Brooklyn Kids Chorus,Sunday, May 19 from 3-5 p.m. The kids will perform music from around the globe in a variety of genres from folk to blues to jazz and pop. The kids will be joined by guest musical artists who are celebrated in their fields featuring the legendary New Orleans jazz & blues pianist, HENRY BUTLER.
HENRY BUTLER does not play piano -- he tells stories. The rise, swing, and rumble of his fingers channel sounds as diverse as his New Orleans birth-place: jazz, Caribbean, classical, pop, blues and R&B, among others. A ten-time Pinetop Perkins (formerly W.C. Handy) Best of Blues Instrumentalist Award nominee, Butler brings his vivid, inquisitive personality to every performance. HENRY BUTLER'S impeccable skills and distinguished career have inspired countless audiences, making him the premier exponent of the New Orleans jazz & blues piano tradition. As an entertainer with deep philosophical and cultural roots, she has also conducted workshops, clinics and master classes throughout the country.
In addition to HENRY BUTLER'S amazing talents, the One World Brooklyn Kids Chorus welcomes a line-up of top flight performers. Beloved jazz and gospel singer, Janice Russell and director of the famed Lafayette Inspirational Ensemble says, “I am very excited to be invited to join the One World Brooklyn Kids Chorus with my colleague, revered jazz vocalist, Carla Cook, in a song that embodies the spirit of friendship and fellowship.”
In addition, the One World Brooklyn Kids Chorus will be joined by composer-in-residence Lisa Gutkin, a Grammy award-winning violinist and member of the famed Klezmatics. Ms. Gutkin will perform one of her most popular compositions as well as some surprise favorites. A respected colleague of Ms. Gutkin, Eva Salina, a singer and teacher specializing in the vocal traditions of Eastern Europe and the Balkans will perform as well.
This spring gala concert will be a fundraising event held on Sunday, May 19 from 3-5 p.m. and delicious FREE gourmet snacks will be provided for all attending. Suggested donations of $15 for adults and $5 for children will be graciously accepted. However all are welcome and no one will be turned away for lack of payment. There will be an opportunity to meet and greet the special guest musicians and directors Josh Levine and Carolynn Murphy.
At the "Meet & Greet" after concert "Bagel & Lox" reception (generously provided by Acme Smoked Fish of Brooklyn), delicious, award-winning rugelach & pastries from ERICA'S RUGELACH & BAKING, CO will be available to enjoy, as well as purchase, at the Fundraising Bake Sale. Park Slope's best retail bakery, COUSIN JOHN'S, will have their culinary cake creations to savor.
Based upon the values of peace, love, celebration of diversity, environmental sustainability and fellowship, the One World Brooklyn Kids Chorus is excited to bring an eclectic blend of music to the rich and diverse Brooklyn community through the kids chorus, led by MWMM’s talented teaching artists and music directors.
