(Brooklyn, NY) - Inspired by praises from the internationally acclaimed South African vocal group LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO (during a pre-concert meet & greet ceremony at "Celebrate Brooklyn" on June 28th), the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS resumes it's global musical journey on Thursday, September 26th from 3:30- 5:30 p.m. when they will meet for the first rehearsal of the 2013-2014 season at the historic LAFAYETTE AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH (LAPC) in Fort Greene, Brooklyn.
Under the director of noted, jazz bassist, multi-instrumentalist, recording artist & beloved children's performer, JOSH LEVINE, the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS is committed to singing a repertoire based on the values of love & peace, celebration of diversity, social justice, friendship & fellowship and environmental sustainability.
Joining director, JOSH LEVINE, are two accomplished teaching artists from Brooklyn who each bring an unusual mix of interesting skills. CAROLYNN MURPHY'S multi-faceted credits include a degree in environmental science from Cornell University as well as being a certified Music Together instructor. Her facility on drums, percussion, guitar & banjo as well as swing & tap dance & voice enable her to reach out to kids on many levels. EVA SALINA, an internationally recognized singer & teacher specializing in the vocal traditions of Eastern Europe & the Balkans brings a wealth of experience to the project.
To add to the line up of top teaching talent, internationally renowned classical guitarist, ROBERT SECRIST, continues as the "house guitar" accompanist for the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS. An award-winner of the 4th International Alirio Diaz Guitar Competition, Mr. Secrist is currently working on an all -Bach solo recording.
Since the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS was founded in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy, the eclectic group has given three concert performances featuring music from around the globe in a variety of genres from folk to blues to jazz to pop. The kids have been joined by musical guest artists who are celebrated in their fields of expertise including the legendary New Orleans jazz & blues pianist, HENRY BUTLER. His impeccable skills & distinguished career have inspired countless audiences and have made him the premier exponent of the New Orleans jazz & blues piano tradition. As an entertainer with deep philosophical and cultural roots, he has also conducted workshops, clinics and master classes throughout the country.
Says, Erica Kalick, Executive Director of the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS, "The kids immediately connected with HENRY BUTLER, and we are thrilled to have him back for our gala performance on May 18th, 2014. In addition, we are delighted to welcome back our composer-in-residence, LISA GUTKIN, to the line up of top talent."
LISA GUTKIN, a Grammy award-winning fiddler, singer & songwriter and member of the famed KLEZMATICS, will perform & rehearse with the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS during the 2013-2014 season, when she will premier a new, surprise song for the kids. Says Ms. Gutkin, "I loved the dedication that these kids had at the rehearsals and how much they embraced the songs. But then the concert came and they rose even higher. They were seriously professional. I can't wait to see them again."
The Fall term runs from Thursday, September 26th (with rehearsals held every Thursday from 3:30 to 5:30 pm @ the LAPC) and culminates in a concert on Sunday, December 8th at the LAPC from 11 am to 1:00 p.m. A "Meet & Greet" reception will follow with special FREE sweet treats from ERICA'S RUGELACH & BAKING, CO. featuring award-winning raspberry rugelach, coconut chocolate dipped macaroons and assorted specialty cookies. Holiday (Hannukah & Christmas) cookie boxes will be available for purchase with a portion of sales benefiting the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS.
For the first time, at the upcoming December 8th concert, the kids will perform with the LAPC adult choir, "The Inspirational Ensemble" under the direction of beloved gospel & jazz singer, JANIS RUSSELL. One of the highlights of the Gala Fundraising concert on May 19th, was a lovely arrangement of "You've Got a Friend" featuring, Ms. Russell who was joined by celebrated jazz vocalist,CARLA COOK.
Says, Reverend Carmen Mason-Browne, interim pastor of the LAPC, "There were so many beautiful moments during the concerts and I was so moved to see how Ms. Russell and Ms. Cook, both members of the LAPC congregation, rose to the occasion to support the kids with their amazing vocal & musical gifts."
The ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS is an initiative to bring children and parents from a diverse community together through music. The Thursday, September 26th open rehearsal marks the 2nd season of the MUSIC WHERE IT MATTERS MOST children's music program at Brooklyn's historic LAFAYETTE AVENUE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH.
