(Brooklyn, NY) - The rapidly growing ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS honored the passing of Nelson Mandela as they joyfully performed the song, "Thula Klizeo" by the internationally acclaimed South African vocal group LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO during their December 2013, "Christmas Time is Here" program. Fueled by praises from Ladysmith Black Mambazo, when the kids had a chance to meet members of the group in a pre-concert, meet & greet reception at "Celebrate Brooklyn," this energy ignited the winter session when the OWBKC more than doubled in size.
Says, Erica Kalick, Executive Director of the OWBKC (also founder of Brooklyn's quintessential Eastern European, specialty bakery Erica's Rugelach & Baking, Co), "We have a very exciting program planned for the kids with new teaching artists and special guest performers who will join the kids at our Gala Spring Concert on Sunday, May 18th from 3-5 pm at the LAPC."
Leading the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS for the spring session will be the very talented, singer-songwriter and recording artist --- JEAN ROHE. Ms. Rohe's lyrical style evokes the heart & spirit of American folk traditions as well as world music influences. Her lovely voice and focused energy has inspired many audiences both young & old. She embraces the core values of the OWBKC whose mission statement is to shine light on timeless values of love &peace, celebration of diversity & beauty, social justice, friendship & fellowship as well as environmental sustainability.
Returning to join, Ms. Rohe, for the spring season will be CAROLYNN MURPHY whose multi-faceted credits include a degree in environmental science from Cornell University as well as being a certified Music Together instructor. Ms. Murphy also had the distinction of performing with the late, legendary folk hero, PETE SEEGER. She will lead a special rehearsal which will feature some of the songs Pete Seeger popularized during his decades long career.
To add to the lineup of amazing teaching talent is the internationally renowned classical guitarist, ROBERT SECRIST, who continues as the OWBKC "house guitarist". An award-winner of the 4th International Alirio Diaz Guitar Competition, Mr. Secrist is currently working on an all-Bach solo recording. His exceptional virtuosity on the classical guitar commenced each performance of the OWBKC setting a tone of first rate musicianship for the audience and the kids.
Since the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS was founded in 2012 during Hurricane Sandy, the group has given four concert performances featuring music from around the globe in a variety to genres --- including folk, blues, jazz & pop. The kids have been joined by top flight professional musical guests including the incomparable New Orleans jazz & blues pianist, HENRY BUTLER, whose impeccable artistry and distinguished career have delighted countless audiences.
"The kids immediately connected with HENRY BUTLER and we are thrilled to have him back for our gala performance on Sunday, May 18th, 2014. In addition, we are honored to welcome back our composer-in-residence, LISA GUTKIN, to the lineup of top talent," commented Erica Kalick.
LISA GUTKIN, the Grammy award-winning fiddler and member of the famed KLEZMATICS, will perform and rehearse with the OWBKC during the spring 2014 season when she will premier a new surprise song written for the kids. "I loved the dedication that these kids had at the rehearsals and how much they embraced the songs. But then the concert came and they rose even higher. They were seriously professional. I can't wait to see them again," says Ms. Gutkin.
Another special guest artist will be beloved singer, multi-instrumentalist & recording artist LORIN SKLAMBERG from the KLEZMATICS. Mr. Sklamberg will teach & perform a song he wrote from the Grammy-winning album, "WONDER WHEEL" which sets to music previously unpublished lyrics by WOODY GUTHRIE and highlights the most iconic & culturally diverse of all Brooklyn neighborhoods --- Coney Island.
Says, SELMA JACKSON, long time Brooklyn business owner & champion of women owned business, Brooklyn resident, social activist and Clerk of Session at the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, "What a joyful contribution the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS has made to the LAPC and the Brooklyn community. It is heartwarming to watch the progress and hear their little voices make a big sound."
