(Brooklyn, NY) --- Now in it's second smash season, the rapidly growing ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS, will premier a new song written by composer-in-residence, LISA GUTKIN, at the 2014 Gala Spring Fundraising Concert on Sunday, May 18th (3-5 pm). Held at the historic Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church in Fort Green, Brooklyn, the acoustically inspiring space will feature an impressive array of world class guest artists who will join the kids. A grammy-winning member of the famed group, THE KLEZMATICS, Ms. Gutkin will perform solo works as well as lead the OWBKC in one of her most beloved songs, "Gonna Get Thru This World."
Ms. Gutkin, an award-winning fiddler & composer, who has played with, Arlo Guthrie, Natalie Merchant, & Pete Seeger, commented, "I love the dedication that these kids had at the rehearsals and how much they embraced the songs. Then the concert came last year and they rose even higher. They were seriously professional. I can't wait to see what they will accomplish in this exciting May concert."
Another special guest artist, also from the KLEZMATICS, will be the beloved singer, multi-instrumentalist & recording artist, LORIN SKLAMBERG. Mr. Sklamberg will perform a song he wrote from the grammy-winning album, 'WONDER WHEEL," which sets to music previously unpublished lyrics by WOODY GUTHRIE and highlights the most iconic & culturally diverse of all Brooklyn neighborhoods --- Coney Island. In addition, Mr. Sklamberg will enchant the audience & kids with some solo works.
Leading the OWBKC is music director, JEAN ROHE, a very talented, singer-songwriter & recording artist whose lyrical style evokes the heart & spirit of American folk traditions as well as world music influences. Her lovely voice and focused energy has inspired many audiences both young & old. She embraces the core values of the OWBKC whose mission statement is to shine a light on timeless values of love, peace & non-violence; celebration of diversity & beauty; social justice; friendship & fellowship as well as environmental appreciation & sustainability.
To add to the lineup of amazing talent is the internationally renowned classical guitarist, ROBERT SECRIST, who continues as the OWBKC "house guitarist." His amazing technical facility and musicianship encompasses a deep appreciation of eclectic styles from Elmore James to Hank Williams to Frank Zappa. An award-winner of the 4th International Alirio Diaz Guitar competition, Mr. Secrist is currently working on an all-Bach solo recording. His exceptional virtuosity on the classical guitar will be showcased at the beginning of the Sunday, May 18th performance. His dedication has set a tone of first rate, professional level musicianship for the kids during the rehearsals.
In addition, the concert will also feature, SHELLY THOMAS, a multi-talented vocalist with the expertise to sing in a wide variety of styles and languages, including Bulgarian, Arabic, Turkish, Greek, Serbian, Macedonian, Croatian, Ukrainian, Spanish, Hindi and Bengali. Appearing in authentic costumes, Ms. Thomas will lead the children in a timely Ukrainian song celebrating the spring season.
The OWBKC will also welcome, CARA BROWNELL, and DEB HOWARD, dedicated choral singers and longtime members of the famous Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church's INSPIRATIONAL ENSEMBLE, under the direction of respected conductor/jazz & gospel vocalist, JANIS RUSSELL. At the concert, Ms. Brownell will perform the classic Carole King song, "You've Got a Friend."
Since the OWBKC was founded in 2012, during the stressful time of Hurricane Sandy, the group persevered and has given five concert performances featuring music from around the globe in a variety of genres --- including folk, blues, jazz & pop. The kids have been joined by top flight professional musical guests including the incomparable New Orleans jazz & blues pianist, HENRY BUTLER. In addition, the OWBKC has been praised by the world famous South African singing group LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO during a meet & greet, pre-concert reception @ the Celebrate Brooklyn concert series in Prospect Park last year.
Says, SELMA JACKSON, long time Brooklyn business owner & champion of women owned business; Brooklyn resident; social activist and Clerk of Session at the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, "What a joyful & inspirational contribution the ONE WORLD BROOKLYN KIDS CHORUS has made to the LAPC and the Brooklyn community. It is heartwarming to watch the progress and hear their little voices make a big sound."
At the meet & greet after concert reception, folks will get a chance to have CD's autographed; savor bagels & lox provided by La Bagel Delight & Acme Smoked Fish, enjoy sweets donated by Erica's Rugelach & Baking, Co & Cousin John's Bakery as well as shop for unique items at a mini spring bazaar.
