When you hear someone talk about “mental illness” or “drug addiction” what is your reaction? Do you feel empathy for the people involved? Or do you silently judge them? According to the substance abuse counselors at NorthKey Community Care, in Covington, KY, there is still a large stigma around people dealing with mental illness, substance abuse or both. In fact, the two often go hand in hand.

According to a government study published in 2014, more than 18% of Americans over the age of 18 suffered from a mental illness, and another 8% reported drug addiction or substance abuse problems. Between the two groups, nearly eight million people with mental illness used alcohol or illegal drugs to cope. The counselors at NorthKey Community Care, who provide mental health and substance abuse services, want to end the shameful stigmas surrounding these diseases and raise awareness instead.

imageHere are three ways to free yourself and others:

  • Educate Yourself:  The more you learn about mental illness and behavioral issues, the easier it is to reject stereotypes and stigmas. Mental illness doesn’t happen because a person is weak or lacks character. Learn the truth about different mental illnesses and spread the word.
  • Find The Person Underneath: Did you know one out of every five American adults is dealing with some type of mental illness? Chances are, you know someone who is seeking mental health services. Try to look beyond the diagnosis and see the person inside. We all face challenges. Strive to be kind, empathetic and understanding.
  • Do Something: There aren’t nearly enough mental illness or addiction treatment programs in America. People who desperately need mental health services or substance abuse counseling don’t have access to the help they need. Talk to your local lawmakers about passing legislation and policies to create better funding for mental health and substance abuse programs.

NorthKey Community Care believes that education, empathy and action can help eliminate the stigmas surrounding mental illness and substance abuse. The goal is to raise awareness surrounding these very real problems and let people know they are not alone.
