If you are searching for a unique and memorable gift for the holidays, purchasing and giving flowers can be a beautiful and vibrant gift. Although many argue that flowers are an ephemeral gift and only last a few short days, LDF Floral and Event Design has a few simple and helpful tips to keep your fresh cut flowers vivid and colorful long after they leave the florist.
- Primarily, check your flowers daily. Keep the vase or container filled with fresh water. Even if the container has floral foam, try and keep the water level as high as possible to promote longevity. Add commercial flesh flower food every few days; this is usually accompanied with the floral arrangement. A packet of floral food helps deter bacteria from infecting your flowers, promotes healthy water absorption, and encourages fresh buds to develop and bloom. Try to avoid mixing different flower foods as it can cause a negative reaction and be detrimental to your bouquet.
- Re-cut their stems every few days. Remove the flowers from the design and remove 3/4th to an inch from the bottom of the stem. Be sure to cut the stem at an angle to allow the flower to absorb water. Use a sharp knife or scissor to avoid smashing and piercing the stems, as this can destroy its vascular system and prevent water absorption.
- Display your flowers in a cool spot. Most flowers prefer temperatures between 65 to 72 degrees Fahrenheit and are best displayed away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or directly under fans. Avoid placing fresh flowers near ripening fruit, as they release tiny amounts of ethylene gas that can age them prematurely.
