Good eyesight is critical to learning many basic skills—if your child has any vision problems, they should be found early to ensure that their development isn’t hindered. During the exam, your physician will evaluate pupil responsiveness—this is to test the reaction of your child’s pupils to the presence and absence of light. Next, they’ll check if your child’s eyes will fixate on and follow an object back and forth. Lastly, they’ll use two cards—one blank and one with stripes—to test preferential vision. The goal here is to have the child look at the stripes, which should naturally draw the eye.
