When I became a realtor way back in 2005, a "high-tech" home might have had built-in speakers and a giant screen to watch movies in the basement. How the times have changed!

When my Dave Neilson of Neilson Homes is preparing a home for sale, he now installs a wide range of products that make our homes "smarter." The most popular item buyers are seeking is a programmable Nest thermostat which was developed by two former Apple engineers. Basically it allows homeowners to use a smartphone to control it remotely and helps homeowners save money and energy.

Another feature that is becoming standard in Wellesley new construction is CAT6 wiring, ethernet cable wire that provides high speed cable connections from every room.

A neighbor of ours has asked me to keep an eye on her home while she travels this winter. She has purchased a handy device that pings her cell phone if the temperature in her home drops below 55. No more worries about frozen water lines and broken pipes!

A high tech improvement we have been considering for our own home is called BeHome247. It creates a "smart home". We will be able to control door locks, lights, cameras, water sensors and more all from our smartphones. More importantly, we can program it to turn up the heat, start the coffee and let the dog out at the same time each morning. (Now if I could only get the coffee delivered to the master bedroom!)

Should you decide to add some tech to your home, when you sell, buyers will appreciate your technology upgrades, whether you are designing a custom dream home or giving your existing home a boost.  Or, if you are seeking a Wellesley home with cool technology, just call your local realtor, Jane Neilson.
