Putting together your turntable setup is a simple process, but to a beginner just starting their new and used vinyl collection, it can be an overwhelming endeavor. Academy Records has you covered, offering not only a myriad of vinyl records to choose from, but also a selection of classic and new turntables. There are a few things you need to know before purchasing any equipment for your turntable setup.
- Know If You Need A Pre-Amp: Many modern turntable come with pre-amps already installed, but if you seek a more vintage and classic set up you may need to get one. A turntable produces PHONO output signals which must be converted into a LINE LEVEL or AUX signal to work with audio equipment. An external pre-amp converts these signals. A DJ mixing board can suffice as a pre-amp.
- Set Your Speakers Up Right: Know if your turntable needs grounding. If your turntable has a built in pre-amp, then it does not need grounding. If you have an external pre-amp be sure to have a grounding cable attached to your pre-amp. Without a grounding cable your speakers will make an obvious and annoying buzzing sound.
- Know If You Want A Belt Drive Or A Direct Drive: Belt drive turntables feature an independent motor that drives the platter via a rubber belt. A direct drive turntable has a platter that is integral to the motor. The main difference here is if you want to scratch or DJ. If you wish to DJ, then chose a direct drive, which generally features sturdier builds, stronger torque, and faster start-up times.
Of course, no turntable is complete without a record. Visit Academy Records and browse through a vast selection of new and used vinyl records.
