The reemergence of vinyl records can be attributed to a number of causes, however many new collectors may not be aware of the rich history and evolution of this music media. Academy Records offers an insight into the past with these facts about vinyl records.
- The origin of the vinyl record can be traced as early as the 19th century: In 1857 French scientist named Leon Scott developed the Phonautograph, which used a vibrating diaphragm to record sound waves on paper. Although only a visual analysis, it laid the ground work for what would become the gramophone.
- The first commercially available LP was a failure: RCA Victor released the first readily available consumer LP in 1930, but the company’s timing was poor and The Great Depression made new technology, a luxury most could not afford.
- The most expensive album ever sold: A rare record from the Velvet Underground sold for $25,000. The original disc, dated 1966, contained early versions of many of the songs that would later appear on the album The Velvet Underground & Nico.
